I am usually not a fan of books with ghosts but lately I've come across a couple which enthralled me from the start, and this is one of them. The reasons are plural: The cover (OK, see the note at the end); the setting, the era, the MCs, and the ghosts.Ainsley Graham is a mid-20s sort of Scottish nobleman in the 1920s with an eye for hot men and an attitude that loves them and leaves them after one encounter. He used to be a very famous professor but his career was destroyed when he started reporting visitations with ghosts.Joachim Cockburn (pronounced two ways in the book, ho-ho-ho), is a late-20s aspiring scholar from England who is still dealing with his PTSD from World War I. His doctorate will be dependent on the research he must do at Ainsley's estate where he is dispatched by his supervisor, who happens to be Ainsely's brother.When Joachim arrives at Castle Graham he is immediately subject to a seduction routine by Ainsely who mistakes him for someone else, an unsuspecting man who was supposed to show up as part of a romantic set-up. This not work, Joachim is horrified but subtly delighted, and we are off on a ghost hunt and lots of silly upper class goings on in Ainsely's very offbeat family and circle of friends.I loved the way new author Ella Stainton set these two men apart: Ainsley is a fit but swimmer-type flaming ginger who wears kilts almost all the time (without under coverings mostly) and Joachim is described as a sandy haired conservative and stoic rugby type with a stubble which drives Ainsley totally up the wall. How their relationship develops, falls apart, reconstitutes and settles is wonderfully detailed and explicitly reported.As for the ghosts, well, they are basically a hoot and it would be churlish to report on who they are, why they are hanging out, and what is the resolution of the mysteries which Ainsley and Joachim encounter.This is the first of a series (on my Kindle the opening chapter of the next one is included--woof!) and I hope the author's communication with me comes through. I asked her who was supposed to be on the cover--she told me that it's supposed to be Ainsely but admitted they got it wrong because he has very vivid red hair and should be wearing kilts. I noted that the cover man looked like the love child of Ainsely and Joachim as she described them and she agreed and hoped that the next cover would be less confusing.But the book, which can be confusing at times until an explanation comes through on the next page, is a head-scratcher only in the sense that I totally admired how someone could have come up with this plot and throw in two of the most wonderfully endearing characters I've come across in months. Bravo.
